REMINDERS
KNOWLEDGE OF THE JUDGING MANUAL. Does the Candidate or Accredited Judge know
or
demonstrate: How to use the judging manual, classification guide, color chart. Did the judge have a judging manual and/or classification book with them for reference? Did the judge examine blooms from every angle. Could
he/she detect substance, conditioning or lack of? Able to detect green blooms? Able to evaluate bloom symmetry? Could he/she accurately and correctly express their views about each entry judged? Did he/she show strong
preferences or prejudices toward certain types or sized of blooms? Did he/she demonstrate an eagerness to learn?
APPLICATION OF POINT SCORING VALUES Does the Candidate or Accredited Judge know or demonstrate: Knowledge of the Score Cards; Knowledge of scoring values by size; Proper deduction of points for negative
qualities; The two ways of using the score card; Accurate definition of favorable and unfavorable items; Decisions based on the overall quality of an entry.
ALERTNESS TO DETAIL Does the candidate or Accredited Judge know or demonstrate
knowledge of bloom entry errors; Improper classification or placement; Knowledge of
exhibitors tricks, i.e. plucked petals, wired stems, false leaves; Recognize that a bloom may be
penalized for insect damage either under color or form; Recognition of spray residue, insect
damage, bruised petals, color bleeding, wolf petals; A recognition of characteristics which
add or detract from color quality; A recognition of asymmetrical blooms such as lopsided,
thin, bearded or dropping petals; An appreciation of distinctiveness and texture.
KNOWLEDGE OF VARIETIES AND CLASSIFICATION Does the Candidate or Accredited
Judge
know or demonstrate; Extensive or limited knowledge of older varieties; Of new varieties and
introductions; Application of the phrase "Majority of floral rays" when defining dahlia
type;
A knowledge of botanical terms, incurve, recurved, straight cactus, semi-cactus, laciniated,
revolute, involute, ray florets, petaloids, quilled, recognition of ball dahlia faults.
JUDGING BEHAVIOR AND COURTESY Is the Candidate or Accredited Judge temperamentally
suited to judging; Does he/she exhibit impatience with other team members; Is he/she
comprehensive, systematic, unhurried; Is the decision based on examination of the overall
quality of each entry; Does he/she "stay on the job"; Does he/she give clear, lucid evaluations;
Does this judge courteously allow other team members to look at the bloom; Does he/she brag
about his/her choice; Are you comfortable working with this judge? Is this judge tactful and
diplomatic in disagreements?
